Pat is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. In our conversation, we discuss her diagnosis with Colon Cancer, how she used humor to stay as human as possible, and how she’s pointing the way for others who battle the disease.
Let’s talk about kicking the hell out of cancer! Rev. Bodenhamer was 36, living and serving in Arkansas when she was diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer. She remembers that first trip to the hospital vividly. “Are you ready to fight?” one doctor asked her after confirming the cancer. “After that, it was a whirlwind,” she says.
Pat’s story is profoundly human. She talks about sharing news of her cancer with church congregants, days after her diagnosis. And she shares how a community stepped up to support her while doctors collaborated to make a plan for her. It’s a story of a woman’s journey, the anger she felt at God, and the hope that came in the midst of suffering. It’s also a story about celebrating milestones and holding onto your humor during one of life’s most difficult journeys.
